Lefkada Island
The Ionian island of Lekfada should be at the top of everyone’s list of places to visit. An island of contrasting beauty just 35 kilometres by 15 kilometres, it boasts the most wonderful golden beaches and vivid blue seas set against a backdrop of stunning mountain scenery.
Thanks to the dedication of Lefkadians to protecting their history, culture and folklore, life on Lefkada remains ardently traditional. Time honoured Greek ways of life can be seen as you wonder through charming mountain villages and pretty resorts and harbours. The trappings of tourism are being rebuffed, making Lefkada a delightful, friendly and relaxed holiday destination.
Long, golden sandy beaches stretch along the west coast, whilst crystal clear waters lap the tall white cliffs of Cape Lefkata on the southern tip. Lefkas derives from Lefko meaning white. The mountain ranges rise up to 1145 metres. Deep ravines hide tumbling waterfalls that emerge amidst olive clad hillsides. A fertile island with far reaching plains and groves, agriculture is still an important source of income for the island.
Perfect for lovers of watersports, sailing, walking and history, a holiday on Lefkada can be as relaxing or active as you chose. You can discover the many orthodox churches and archaeological sites, make the most of the perfect wind conditions for windsurfing, or hire a small boat to discover the many bays. Of course, you can also while away the hours on the beach or at the local taverna.
Meganissi Island
A visit to Meganissi is like taking a step back in time. Just 20 kilometres square, this tiny island lies four nautical miles southeast of Lefkada off the west coast of Greece. Unspoilt, charming and beautiful, the pace of life on Meganissi is relaxed, the way of life peaceful and the locals welcoming and hospitable.
Meganissi offers numerous bays and unusual caves to explore, turquoise seas in which to snorkel and sail, and traditional villages to amble around. A recently made road circles the island, making some of the little bays more accessible. However, the most secluded ones can still only be reached by boat. The centre of the island, fertile and green, is best explored by foot. Paths and tracks twist across the island amongst the terraced olive groves and maquis. The smell of pines and views of the mainland are spectacular.
The two main harbours of Vathi and Spilia offer safe moorings to local sailors, and have waterside tavernas to while away an hour or two. Above these two harbours are the quaint villages of Katomeri and Spartohori. The labyrinth of tiny lanes and alleyways form a maze of whitewashed houses and courtyards in these delightful villages. A handful of churches boast the best sea views and a selection of tavernas offer tasty traditional Greek meals. Residents of these villages are kept busy harvesting olives, milking the goats and sheep and tending their land.
Within easy reach by boat of both Lefkada and the mainland, yet away from it all, Meganissi is an idyllic holiday escape.
Moraira
Costa Blanca stretches along the Mediterranean coast of eastern Spain. Retaining a great deal of beauty and charm that you might not have expected to find, this region has much to offer those who are willing to head off the beaten track.
Picturesque Mediterranean landscapes provide the setting for this coastline, which is home to lively, cosmopolitan resorts as well as areas that maintain a rural feel. The memory of this region’s Moorish past is kept alive in the valleys, with terraced vegetable gardens rising up the hills. The combination of almond tree fields, vineyards, orchards and magnificent palm trees creates a type of vegetation that is unique in Europe. The climate is variable, with a mild temperature many of us prefer and low rainfall.
The artist Salvador Dali really put the region onto the map. He lived in Cadaques for about 50 years, making Costa Blanca a popular visitor destination. Perhaps too popular – many tourists flocked to the region and tourism took over certain resorts. Cadaques, however, escaped it all and retained its charm largely due to its previous inaccessibility, and is now home to the Salvador Dali museum. Alicante, once of the best known towns of the Costa Blanca, has a delightful historic centre, with beautiful boulevard and pleasant shopping street as well as access to the beach via overground streetcars. Like most Spanish cities, Gerona is dominated by the Rambla, a bustling shopping area rich with restaurants, boutiques and life. In the heart of Gerona is its centrepiece, the cathedral, where a place of worship has existed since the third century.
The Costs Blanca offers something for everyone, from history, culture, and wonderful scenery. You can relax on the long stretches of beach, browse the designer shops, or ski - on snow or water. The lively tourist resorts of the Costa Brava haven’t disappeared if that’s what you’re looking for, but venture out and explore to find so much more.
